HOW TO CARE FOR LEATHER CAMERA BAGS

May 8, 2011, Hints

It happened! You finally received your long waited, stylish and functional camera bag from natural leather. You are fascinated and excited, the colour is gorgeous and the look and feel is exactly as you have expected. It looks natural, smells good and it is a genuine pleasure to touch it. Naturally, you want your new bag to keep its great look as long as possible. Here are several tips you should follow to ensure the durability of a leather bag:

•Storage: don’t keep your bag where it cannot breath. Plastic bag or box would be the worst choice. Cloth cover bag is perfect for a regular storage when you do not use a bag.

•Shape: for the bag to keep its shape a broad hanger is needed. It is recommended to hang a bag from time to time.

•Moisture: If a bag becomes wet, just let it dry naturally. Avoid extreme heat or humidity - it may damage the skin's natural oils and might change its look. Avoid using iron or a dryer even in extreme cases. Keep the leather item away from any heat sources.

•Regular cleaning: if you want to clean a bag, use a damp cloth for regular care, cleaning off food items or easy stains. Four times a year deep cleaning with a special leather care treatment or leather conditioning cream (e.g. containing beeswax) is recommended. You need to be very careful in the choice of a treatment. Turpentine and mineral spirits must be avoided as they can pull colour, and caustic household chemicals should never be used to clean leather and leather preparations that contain alcohol should also be avoided.

•Special cleaning: if you happened to get stains from oil or grease, those can be cleaned by grinding a usual blackboard chalk and sprinkling the area then leaving the powder on for a twenty-four hour period so that it becomes dry. If the leather item has an ink stain on it, spray the stain with hairspray. Then, wipe off the leather with a clean, dry cloth. Ink is a very difficult stain to remove from leather. If it does not come out with the hairspray, you may need to take it to professional leather cleaner.

•Colour: to keep your bag shiny and in original colour, follow these easy rules:

•Don’t wear clothes, which leave stains or make other things coloured (e.g. specific jeans materials, some of velvet clothes) together with a leather bag to avoid dark marks;

•Regular use of treatments will ensure its shine and durability;

By keeping this information in mind, you will be able to keep your leather bag looking gorgeous for a long time. Leather handbags can really last you a lifetime, as long as you take care of them properly. And it is always worth it!
