Nostalgia in Fashion: American Idol

October 9, 2011, POMPIDOO general topics
We all know fashion walks in a spiral mode - it loves coming back to what our grandmothers loved to wear. And funny enough - as soon as designers make their next move and pick another piece of clothes from the past, it immediately hits the stage. What is it? A collective nostalgia? This time we talk about American Fashion in 50-ies.

What a perfect time it was! After the War time, fashion flourished: soft femininity of Christian's Dior silhouette - with its sweeping longer skirts, fitted waist, and rounded shoulders - conquered the world.

On February 12, 1947, Christian Dior launched the first collection of the House of Dior. The new collection went down in fashion history as the "New Look". It was generally characterized by a below-mid-calf length, full-skirt, pointed bust, small waist, and rounded shoulder line. Hard to believe, it was resisted first, especially in America, however, the radical new silhouette soon became immensely popular, influencing fashion and other designers for many years to come.

The fashion of those days has so much in common with POMPIDOO - it's feminine, it's vivid, it's open to the world, it's playful and at the same time it's bold. A perfect mixture of a stylish city girl's character!
